Gabe smiled as Kat poked at him, the way some of his tutors had used to do to him. She was really starting to let her guard down around him, so hopefully Gabe wouldn't do something stupid and ruin it all again. He had to remember what she said right off the bat in this conversation and hold onto the image of what he was being before. She had inadvertently opened his eyes to the monster he was becoming and so, in a way, Gabe owed her for that. He pondered all that over as he reached the counter and laid his stuff out to be bagged up. His smile remained as he paid the cashier and handed Kat the small piece of candy for her to take home to her little sister.
"I've learned I've not been as open minded as I thought I was being," he said as he walked away from the counter, letting the kids behind him clamor forward. "I was being the very thing I've tried to tear down since day one of school," he finished, stopping at the door of the shop, holding it open for Kat, motioning with his hand for her to go first. This was something which just came natural to him, something his father had beat into him since he was big enough to walk. Chivalry might have been dead, but some of it lived on in people like Gabe, even if only a little.
As he stood there, he wondered if Kat had really learned anything and for a moment thought about asking her, but quickly avoided that disaster. He was still on a very fragile frozen lake and while it seemed safe to skip about, he knew looks could be deceiving. The ice was usually the thinest where it looked the thickest and while Kat was being nice, who knew if she wasn't just setting him up for a very cold and disappointing fall.

Kat walked with him, listening to him as he talked about not being as open minded as he intended. And also as he started talking about tearing down something blah, blah, blah.. saving humanity from itself. She gave a slight sigh and shook her head a little bit? Did he really go around seeking evil like this to destroy? She gave him a pat on the back as she passed him going out the door, "One thing at a time, superman." She wasn't sure if he would get it or not. Sure it was old, however it used to be really famous. She didn't get around very much in the muggle world but she knew it still had a following. Heck, perhaps it had passed down generations of the first hardcore fans. She fancied it because it actually had someone doing all sorts of amazing things and they weren't labeling him a complete freak. However he was this total geek that was ready to martyr himself out at the first opportunity. And oddly it was falling into place. Sure she didn't really know Gabe's magical skill and he could be really... average or lucky Hogwarts keeps him, however even just sloppy magic is better than the best attempt by a muggle.
As she stepped out of the shop she turned around to look at him. "So what do you do when you're not saving the world one person at a time?" She was curious to know a little more about him. And though she wasn't sure if he was wanting to spend any more time with her or not this afternoon she was giving him the perfect opportunity to offer his company.
Sure Kat seemed alot warmer right now, however she was a moody creature. And as of the moment Gabe hadn't really ruffled any feathers. It was nice to be out and talking to someone new for a change. And though he hardly knew anything about her he wasn't really pushing or making it difficult for her to edit parts of her life. And truly if one really did befriend her, well she could take alot more pressure and stress on the relationship. Perhaps, maybe, just maybe something like that could happen between them.

The Superman mark hit home as Kat passed Gabe, patting him on the back. That was at least the fourth time she had mentioned something only a muggle should have known, a muggle or someone who had really done their homework in the muggle studies department. He was curious as to how she knew so much, but kept that question carefully filed away for a later date, if he got it. Right now was about making Kat comfortable in his presence, not pumping her for personal information, besides, Gabe liked talking about himself. He might have been a martyr, but come on, everyone liked to be in the spotlight every now and again.
He let the door to the shop close behind him and he fell in line beside Kat on the sidewalk, rolling the top of the paper bag down and placing the bag underneath his arm. He smiled and looked about the street, enjoying the warmth and clear day before him. Witches and wizards brushed by him and Kat, going about their own business. Everything here just buzzed and leaped at Gabe, just like it did the first time he set foot here. To those who were raised in all of this, they just wouldn't understand. Just as the muggle world fascinated some wizards here, this world continued to surprise him each day the sun rose and sat.
"Well, if you want to know how Gabriel Sutherland spends a free day in town," he said looking to Kat, squinting one eye to block out the sun, "Then you'll have to find out for yourself. Think you're up to it?," he asked her, smiling boyishly as he crossed his arms now. He thought he saw an opportunity here, something Kat was giving him and he'd be a fool to pass it up. She was wanting to see just who she was up against and even though Gabe was dying to ask her like a billion questions, he would give her the time she needed to feel comfortable enough to allow him.

Kat walked along a bit, not sure if he was following her or she was following him. And at first glance you could tell he was completely content. Reminding her much like a child... all holding his bag of candies and looking at everything passing in wide eyed admiration. Well at least that's definitely what it looked like on the outside. Maybe she was too harsh on him before for all screaming and yelling like he was psycho. Maybe he didn't have a fulfilling childhood and he just hadn't grown up totally. He tended to resemble a kid at times from his expressions to his poorly chosen words. But hey, kids weren't bad. At least not all of them. Really the most appealing thing about young people was innocence. And though she knew she didn't have his real attention at the moment he made her flash just a small smile, that was before looking back in front of her and blocking her face by pushing her bangs behind her ear where she could save face and regain her composure.
When he finally spoke again, mentioning spending the day with him a shocking fact came to mind. He fit into profile with those serial killers. It was true that over time during many different time periods some guy acts all nice and harmless but then you find some girl laying in a pool of her own blood down some dark alley. She couldn't remember just how it went but it also seemed most of those guys were rich. She had read books dedicated to freaks just like these... She cocked an eyebrow at how foolish that seemed. After all she could do magic so she hardly believed that she was as helpless as previous victims. Plus he was in Hufflepuff. Hufflepuff for God's sake!!! "You know.. if I go missing, contrary to popular belief people will look for me." She said casually, more of a joke now but still wanting to have it out in the open. "But... if I said 'no' I know it's not going to break your heart or anything.. and you won't be mad, right?" After all even if she did think that spending the rest of the day with him would be .. interesting.. well she couldn't let him know that's actually what she wanted to do, could she? Wasn't that like the number one rule of some craptastic... well tradition of sorts?

Gabe really didn't find much humor in her answer and the way he had to force even that little smile to remain might have given that away. The little bit of interest she had been showing in him all sort of faded now, leaving an emptiness behind in its wake. Had she not been listening to anything he had said about himself and his parents? Did she really think he was going to do something to her? Gabe wasn't that sort of person and manipulation was certainly way out of his league. Sure, Gabe might have left little bread crumbs for people to pick up every now and again, but he was by no means a Machiavellian.
He looked forward again and grew a tad silent, taking a long steady breath before answering her. "No, I won't get mad," he said, only answering half her question, but he still forced a smile, after all, he didn't want her hanging around because of some weird pity reason. The odd thing was, this wasn't the first time Gabe had been shot down, but with Kat it hurt more than usual. Yeah, he cared about her, more than he had for any other girl he knew and while he skirted that idea, he knew it was coming around full circle and eventually he was going to have to face that fact. I guess it was better to do so know then like twenty years down the road, after he was in some dead end marriage with kids he really didn't want, still clinging to the 'what if' scenario of the girl he let get away.
"And yeah, it might not break my heart," he said glancing to Kat from the corner of his eye, not believing what he was about to say, "but it just might crack it somewhat," he finished, letting out a sigh, mentally kicking himself for just making a huge ass out of himself. She would just love this now wouldn't she? Probably throw another fit and cuss him out again, kick him in ol' twig and berries...the whole nine yards. Then again, he knew it would hurt a whole lot more if he didn't say it, after all, no room for 'what if'.

When Gabe had told her that he wouldn't get mad and he was acting all casual, well she figured she'd just slyly slip out of the situation then. I mean all she would have to do is act like she was very mildly relieved that he would be fine with her skipping out on him and rush off to something else (or at least appear to). Not that there wasn't anything that she could be off doing, she just wasn't all that eager to do it. And strange how you just had your whole day planned out and then after just a chance meeting with someone else it didn't sound so grand..
Truth was she was starting to like him, sure the whole idea and such was still on thin ice.. And he did seem immature and such but actually that's what made him all that more bearable. It was some adjusting, true but perhaps it was that air of innocence about him that let her lower her guard just a little. And really maybe she shouldn't be too hard on him. I mean after all he had put up with a lot more than most and he could turn out to be a very valuable friend. Perhaps she would try to make it all easier on him. Not that she needed a shoulder to cry on at night or that she would allow herself to get dependent on him.. cause that's just not who she is. To depend on someone is one of the worst mistakes anyone can make, because more often than not they always let you down.
Then when he made that sappy comment she gave a slight laugh, low and sort of like a huff.. but hey, that's laughing to her kind. She looked at him and shook her head, almost as if scolding him but she lacked any real anger or sternness in it. "You're so full of sh*t." She commented as if she believed it to be a joke and teasing him about it a half laugh to her voice. She gave him a playful light shove and turned back towards the direction they were heading in. "Well, what did you have in mind?" she asked as she casually glanced back over to him.

It took Gabe a moment to process the disbelief in Kat's voice and statement, but then he remembered who he was dealing with. She had spent the past six years with every sort of cheating backstabber imaginable and allowing anyone like that to get close to you was just asking for disaster and while Gabe was willing to take that risk, everyone else wasn't. Trust was a fickle mistress and earing it was one of the hardest things to do. To some, it was a game, to lure another into false confidence and then just crush them to prove some sort of delusional superiority. It was hard for Gabe to even imagine doing that to someone, much less actually doing it. He had never betrayed anyone, or at least not intentionally.
He shook his own head this time, laughing, but more disapprovingly this time around. He had been careful long enough and so without testing the ice, he stepped first. "I'm being serious you know," he said as he rebounded slightly from Kat's nudge, looking straight ahead of him as he began to feel a slight burn across the back of his neck. Fear was creeping up on him and he laid his hand to the back of his neck to try and brush it away. His hands weren't much cooler, but he hoped it would be enough, although all it did was knot his stomach up a little.
He forced a laugh, trying to shake the nerves which were eating him alive right now, "Eh, forget it," he said glancing to her, "How about a butterbeer or something to eat?," he asked her, still smiling, trying to drown his last sappy statement down. It was clear that Kat had no idea of how he felt about her, hell, he wasn't even really sure himself. The whole idea of just giving himself freely and without a thought to someone else to hold and do with as they pleased frightened him. Sure, he had done it friends, but that was different, even in friendship, you kept a bit of yourself back in order to maintain a level head, but in a serious relationship, it was all or nothing. Gabe preached about giving it your all, but never had he really done it. Call it hypocritical, but come on, he's only human.

When Gabe gave an uptight laugh and told her he was serious she sort of stopped in her tracks. It was so hard to imagine how she was supposed to take that comment. And of course a lot of gears were clicking and turning inside of her head. Perhaps he thought he liked her a little too much. Which that was such an odd idea, considering that she was like the ice queen. But really it could be all sorts of things, the total appeal of her being mysterious... she was feisty and passion did tend to be spontaneous. But whatever he was confusing for puppy love or just genuine excitement... well she could forgive it. Besides it wouldn't be too long before it lost it's shine and he wouldn't have to be so nervous around her at times like this..
However, speaking about him being nervous, she could actually get some humor out of this. And I know that it sounds weird and it's not really meant to be degrading, however all women like to pull strings on guys when they have the chance (all women, don't deny it). It was such an entertaining idea of a man who's supposed to be all independent and running things and keeping the woman in line, well becoming such a soft and vulnerable creature.
She smiled, mentally - mentally mind you, figuring that she might as well take advantage of this opportunity. Besides, perhaps he would break under pressure a little and realize that she was way too pushy and ... *unstable* to pursue. Not that she really believed that he would.. But she owed him, big time for their first meeting so she didn't feel the least big guilty (like she would anyway). And even if it was something that would pass quickly she might as well get a few shots in there to make him squirm (if he would) just like he had made her.
She stood still, turning around to look at him again, leaning her head a little to the right with her eyes squinted. It was sort of between a look of contemplation and not really understanding the puzzle standing before her. "No." She said simply when he said to forget it. "You wouldn't have said something if there was something you didn't want me to know." She arched her left eyebrow, giving him a look as if he was caught red handed.
She wasn't really the touchy sort of person at all. Well, sure, she had on more occasions than she could count grabbed hair, clothes, swung punches and even tried to jab out eyes (ah, home life). But anyway, that was a different nature - something that she was used to and came natural. Being nice and... all ... you know, sappy and care-y well.. that really seemed odd to her. But regardless of what she generally felt she was ready to bite the bullet. She took a step closer, full confident and not really seeming as if this action or awkward conversation was bothering her at all. Plus a bonus was she was up front for the show if he came through and gave her one. "You wanted to get to know one another better, right? Well, nows the best time to talk.. I'm listening." She kept her eyes locked on his held his hand on the back of his neck. Sure she had heard about getting something to eat or drink but well.. that could wait. Show first and food later. Besides more than likely she would be in a better mood and digest better.

Gabe stopped dead in his tracks as Kat put him on the spot. He didn't turn around and the defiant 'no' she very emphatically sounded off, made his cringe slightly. His hand rubbed back and forth across his neck as he closed his eyes and almost stopped breathing. His heart practically freed itself from his chest, jumped out onto the sidewalk and ran off down the street. All color washed from his face and his head began to swim, his hands shaking slightly, forcing him to divide his already thin attention into two places at once. He couldn't raise his eyes, but found them glued to the ground, darting back and forth, his tongue licking across his dry lips slowly as he frantically tried to work up the courage to do whatever it was he had to do. This of course was useless, I mean, Gabe had no idea of what he had just put himself into. Yeah, it sounded good at the time but that was just the problem wasn't it? All sorts of things sound good inside your head, but when you implement those plans, you start to see just how foolish they really are.
Gabe knew he had to turn around, but the very thought made him want to throw up. His stomach was eagerly pushing his breakfast back the way it had entered, causing him to get that sticky dry feeling in his mouth. His eyes darted to the side, trying to catch a glimpse of Kat through his peripheral vision, but no luck. So, with very uneasy footing, Gabe slowly turned around, his head still lowered slowly, his eyes full of fear, you know...the 'deer caught in the headlights' look. For a moment, he thought about trying to steer her into one of the bars for some privacy, but then again, wasn't that exactly what he denied her on their first meeting? Oh, how fair was this? His own deeds catching up with him. Why can't it ever be the good ones which come back around?
He cleared his throat and took a step or two closer to Kat, scratching the side of his head with his finger. "Well, seeing as how your going to make me do this here, no matter how much I try to move it somewhere a bit more private," he said nervously, laughing in some sort of weird defense, "I.....like you Kat," he said, sounding like some seventh grader who was asking out a girl to the school dance. Why didn't he just write her note asking, 'Do you like me, check 'yes' or no'?' He narrowed his eyes as he searched hers, looking for any sort of life saving device, something to help him dig himself out of this hole he had so expertly fell into.

Kat watched as Gabe turned around slowly, then making his way even closer to her. Her eyes didn't waiver, trying to lock onto his despite his sudden shy behavior. Well, this was partly satisfying, however it was just one small incident and as with most things once you started something you had to finish it. But luckily for him Kat wasn't as hard core about tearing him down to the point where he couldn't be built back up again. No, he was actually on her good side and she didn't mind the fact that his reaction wasn't exactly what she was setting him up for. No, she figured that she'd at least had a stutter or something embarrassing. The only thing he gave her was talking like a five year old, but that was okay.
After a moments pause of nothing, looking at him and trying to let this sink in that he had such a mild reaction, she finally gave a nod, seeming to relax completely. "Well.. I sort of like you too, Gabe. I mean I don't normally go around spending the day with people I hate." Her eyes kind of rolled up in thought. Kat really didn't want to lie and that would be bad if she did that between them. "Actually... I do it all the time but that's called school and home." She was playing it off innocently and besides she wasn't fully sure that it had any more meaning than that. He was a bit soft... for all she knew this could be his time of the month. Not that she was saying she liked him any less because he seemed he could be a bit more girlie than even she could with effort. Hell most girls would love something like that, a sensitive guy that actually feeds their feminine and loving side making them feel like a goddess. Kat hadn't ever really thought about it. She was so defensive she had never gotten so far as to have to worry about that possibility. She gave a shrug, "I'm not going to chew you up and spit you out for that so there's no need to act worried." She would push that just a little, however he may choose to not mention it again. If so she'd probably totally forget it too.
"So now that you've got that off your chest and you're still alive.... I have all day and we can grab something if you like." If he didn't talk to her more here she could always poke at him more when they set down somewhere. "I never got to ask what kind of music your dad sings." She knew a good deal about muggle stars and such, at least those in the category of her liking. However she wasn't as accustomed to the muggle sayings and such as he was.. So she hoped that she asked that correctly. It wasn't anything really important, like starving kids in China, or saving the teary eyed puppies from being served in restaurants.. But hey, it was giving him an exit if he absolutely had to have one. Besides, she really did want to know. Modeling, well that wasn't her thing. She wasn't interested in people telling other people what they should look like. Music was more enjoyable and it told more about oneself and their pain and flaws.

Wow....that was a tad bit unexpected if I do say so myself. Gabe was still sort of waiting for that bomb to explode and send him flying off in the direction of embarrassment to die a very slow and very public social death. Kat had the perfect opportunity to pay him back and while it would have been fitting, she pulled her punch, giving him a break of sorts. Gabe wasn't complaining by any means, but he was knocked off guard, his social persona stumbling backward. He of course began to breath normally again and all that sickness went away with a snap of lady luck's fingers. He laughed, relieved and nervously, trying to figure out what was going on and just if it was really happening.
Gabe looked back over his shoulder, toward the entrance of Diagon Alley. Behind that wall and then on down the street was the place where his father was taking a break from it all. His father was hitting some of the smaller clubs to sort of get back to his roots, to try and remember the reason why he got into the business to begin with. Gabe was scheduled to meet him but not until later and to be honest, the old man would understand if he was late, after all, girls were a musicians best friend...right next to martinis.
"Lounge music," he said turning his head back to Kat, his trademark smile back where it belonged, "Know what that is?," he asked her, putting her muggle knowledge to the test. If she could answer him, maybe even throw a name out there, then perhaps he would take her to meet the old man. Of course, when he thought about that, he sort of furrowed his brow and looked off, remembering that might not be such a good idea. His parents were accepting of who and what he was, but magic still made them slightly uneasy, not to mention quite embarrassing for Gabe.

She gave a slight laugh when he asked her if she knew what lounge music was. "Obviously, it's music." she commented in a good but sarcastic way. Of course it was hard to fight her true nature and interfere with the way she normally reacted. But quiet the contrary she liked lounge music, mind you sung by talented people. Not just anyone could pull it off. And on her music list back home she had more than a couple selections that fit under this category. But then she also remembered that they were talking about his dad so she should clear up the point that she wasn't trying to be a b*tch.
"I mean Sinatra pretty much set the way... or at least he's the most popular for it." she gave a slight shrug of her shoulders as if she could be wrong about this. She had many forms of muggle knowledge all open for her exposure however it was hard to cover so much when you weren't raised in it from birth. Still she liked to study things that had more of an antique status such as lounge music and well all sorts of fascinations that happened in times she couldn't start to fully imagine. "Of course alot of people don't appreciate real music anymore. They want everything to be so complex and angsty." She sort of narrowed her eyes while saying this because yeah, she listened to alot of it too. And she quickly threw her hands up as if caught, "Hey, I'm guilty of liking alot of it too." But she usually had no clue what was going on in the music world while attending Hogwarts.
She decided to stop trying to feed a conversation that he knew more about it than her. She wasn't used to this.. I mean at least not when she was willingly participating in a conversation. Probably because she didn't have many that weren't with people unlike herself.
She pulled her full attention back in the moment and made herself be a bit more serious and ... well.. interested. "So that's what he sings, lounge music?" Her usual cold and venomous tone was so .. mild compared to her usual speaking. She glanced off in thought again, "I like deep smooth voices.. " she casually muttered. See thats another reason she makes it rare that she speaks or befriends someone. She goes about spouting random stupid facts about herself as if in some sort of day dream where it really matters. Right now she just wanted to shut up and let him say something, anything to keep her from blurting out scraps of useless info here and there.

d*mn.....d*mn her. Gabe couldn't help but mentally hang his head in defeat and smile. She was more knowledgeable in muggle studies than he thought. If she had been faking it or just getting really lucky because she stayed awake in class, then the question Gabe posed to her should have tripped her up. Muggle music, well...music in general, wasn't something really brought up in the magical world and to be honest, Gabe didn't know why. Sure there was some music going on, but you never really heard anything about it. It was like music was a wizarding taboo and anyone who admitted to listening to it would be strung up.
Clapping his hands slowly, Gabe bowed his head in defeat and a bit of admiration. "I am impressed," he said as he looked back up to Kat and faced the fact that he just might have to take her to meet the old man. This thought was put on hold as she suddenly blurted out some intriguing yet odd little statement. Gabe widened his eyes, arching his eyebrows and giving Kat a shocked sort of look. "Do you now?," he asked her, letting her know he had something to tease her about now. That was a priceless bit of information, yet it was something personal he had been graced with, so for now, he would hold back on the witty remarks.
His eyes took on a more mischievous look now as he smiled ever so slowly. "Well, armed with that little bit of information, I think I'll have to make sure you stay away from the old man," he said, scratching his cheek, "because I think mum just might some competition if you entered the race," he added, giving Kat a slight compliment, crossing his arms again. "There's a place about four stores down that serves a mean sandwich," he threw out, offering Kat a lifeline of sorts, a means of escape to get out and put the light back on him.

Kat quirked her eyebrow a bit as he told her he was impressed. True she had alot of muggle knowledge, I guess it just never really came up or no one ever pointed out that they picked up on it. Of course Slytherins didn't really talk about muggle things. So perhaps she never had the opportunity. And no, she didn't take muggle studies.. She didn't want to be lynched by her own house. Besides... she didn't know if she really wanted to devote a precious empty slot to that class. Not that she hated the thought, it was just everything else, in a magical school seemed so much more important. And if something like that was going to help her get a job, well she thought she could get by on the knowledge she already had.
She hadn't meant for that comment to slip out, it was actually .. like what? An observation of why she liked lounge music? Yeah, sometimes she did that. At least she wasn't violent when she blurted out something like that. Anyway, he would soon get used to it, she was sure... That was if they kept talking. Who knew? They could go right back to school and never cross paths. But what made the whole ordeal really bad was he picked right up on that and she closed her eyes tightly for a moment as if willing it all away or at least trying to calm down whatever reaction she might have. "You'll have to learn to tune me out. I sometimes talk to myself and you just happened to be there to eavesdrop."
Then he made the comment about his old man and it actually made a tinge of pink creep upon her cheeks. Why was she embarrassed? Especially over someone she didn't know. Perhaps that was completely it, she didn't know his dad from Adam.. and she didn't feel it appropriate to say anything in her defense because she had a poor way of wording things. So she was stuck in a bad situation with him able to think of that in any way he wanted to take it.
Thank God he offered her some point of escape because she quickly took it. Almost cut him off during the sentence, "Yeah. Yeah, that sounds good." She didn't care where they went as long as there was a small silence and the ability to shift the conversation to something else for the time being. She would let him lead the way since he knew just where this place was. "So what were you doing in Diagon Alley today, anyway?" Not that she had the right to ask, and she knew that.. but it was getting the topic back on him. Which is where she felt most comfortable.
She waited for him to answer and lead, pushing her hands down into the pockets of her robes. Not really cold but finding the silky fabric that lined the pockets and rubbing it between her fingers. She fidgeted from time to time, it was a way to tell she was nervous or flustered - you know before she gets to the point where she just yells or acts out physically to rectify the situation.

Gabe tilted his head as Kat's cheeks turned a shade of pale pink. She was actually embarrassed and Gabe was the one who had caused it. This would have been the perfect opportunity to turn the screws so to speak, but true to himself and his word, Gabe kept his mouth shut. He mentally jotted it all down of course, after all, if he and Kat did end up as friends (or something else) then he would need it in case he ever found himself in a similar situation. Kat would probably deny it, but that was alright, he and she both knew it was true and that was all he would need.
Her nervous twitch caught his eye, but barely and so, trying to keep her in that comfortable zone, Gabe jerked his head in the direction behind him. "Come on," he said as he turned and headed up the street toward a little no nothing shop which looked like it had seen better days. It wasn't dirty or anything, just looked like it could use a face lift and a bit of...well...anything actually. It was a pub more or less and taking one look at Gabe would raise the question of how someone of his financial standing had found such a place. It looked like a blue collar establishment, not the hang out of any high social climbers and while Gabe wasn't rubbing shoulders with any rich wizarding families, he was better off than a lot of others here.
He stopped just outside the door of the shop, looking the place over like it was the greatest thing ever. "She ain't much, but man...are the sandwiches the best," he said with a laugh, reverting to that little boy syndrome he seemed to be eat up with. For a kid with a silver spo.on, it didn't take much to make Gabe happy. Simple things, like the smallest act of magic or a run down sandwich shop, caught his eye the quickest, however, seeing as who he was keeping company with today, it seemed that that rule didn't apply for everything.
