Kat's silence was a tad uncomfortable, but Gabe didn't really mind, after all, she was running into a wall with him presently. Anger wasn't something which Gabe showed often and ranting and raving all over him wasn't something which turned his world upside down. Yeah, he didn't like having people mad at him, but he wasn't going to get all upset and totally chaotic over it. He would work at the problem from a position with which he was comfortable with, that being a bit of comedy, hence his smile.
"I'm not going to get all worked up and fight with you Kat, so let's both just put this away and enjoy our food," he said, offering some sort of peace settlement. Fighting with Kat wasn't something Gabe was here for, no, it was the opposite. He was here because he enjoyed spending time with and around her. He didn't know why Kat kept finding ways to be mad at him, even if it was right there in front of his face. All Gabe knew was that Kat kept finding some way to twist his words, either because she was crazy or that was just how her brain worked.
Gabe let his argument with Kat go now, and whether Kat would or could do the same remained to be seen. Forgiveness was something Gabe was known for, some calling it a strength while others looked at it as just another weakness. Being able to let petty childish thing go, heck, even the large things, was a strength no matter how you looked at, after all, anyone could be pissy but it took something a bit stronger to be cheerful all the time.

She couldn't stand the way Gabe just brushed it all off as if it was nothing. Of course it shouldn't upset him that he liked to show off that he liked spending time with other girls.. Especially while a current one was in the room and breathing the same air as Kat. And really she was madder at herself than anything. He didn't mean anything. He was a muggle born Hufflepuff and neither was anything to brag about in the least. He was annoying.. and .. seeming like a self righteous martyr. And who cared if he was willing to take one verbal swing after another, she didn't ask him to. He should have learned early on that it was best to just give it up, tuck tail and run. Always trying to make her life and brighten her day.. for what? Company he could brag about? Get to really know her then tell the next girl about how he'd tamed a freak. She didn't think so. She wasn't letting that happen. Nope, not in this life or the next.
She sighed, swallowing to get the taste of her own blood out of her mouth. Her chest felt almost too tight to breath. She didn't want to be rational.. however she was an adult now. She couldn't always solve her problems by fighting them the best way she knew how.. well other than abandonment. So therefore she unclenched her fists, and let them rest in her lap because she knew that her palms would have deep marks where she had dug her nails into them. A few deep breaths and she felt she could slow down, hell she felt as if the room was spinning anyway. "I don't think we should talk to each other anymore." She put it out there in the open, looking straight up into his eyes and trying to pick out every flaw he had so she wouldn't buckle.
True he had pissed her off but he also hurt her feelings.. in an odd way. And that she couldn't as easily forgive or feel comfortable around. And the worst thing was now she saw that she was vulnerable with him. However if she made sure to forget about him, well then she wouldn't have to worry about anything. That's what life is about, right? - Taking care of yourself.

Gabe stopped eating and let Kat's words sink in. If she had spouted this maliciously instead of so dead serious, Gabe might not have gotten so worried. Something had gone seriously wrong somewhere and despite his best recollection efforts, Gabe had no idea of exactly where the tower had begun to crumble. This certainly wasn't what he was working toward and not what he wanted by a long shot. Best try to salvage something if he could and if he couldn't...well....that wasn't an option.
"Alright......that's totally your right," he said, taking some dangerous steps now, but ones he knew he had no control over, "But I would like to know why," he said, hoping Kat would let him know......and truthfully. All sorts of excuses could be made, but only one was the truth and perhaps if he could get Kat to face the truth, then something might be salvaged after all. "I've reached out as far as I can Kat, that last little bit you have to put forth the effort," he went on, pushing his plate away and resting his elbows on the table once again. "Its alright to let your guard down every now and again, not everyone is out to get you," he added, sort of muttering it more than really saying it, dropping his gaze and head. It was clear Gabe was waiting for something, whether it be an answer or the soft sound of Kat walking away, either one, just as long as Kat was sure of what she was doing.
Gabe had been in this situation more times than he liked to admit, some of them working out and some of them not. The ones that didn't were usually because the other person was too stubborn to face themselves and just reach out and Gabe hoped Kat was stronger that. She had heart, but all the cynicism from her house mates had buried it under malice and broken little pieces of what she really was. Too many times hurt and not enough time of healing.....

Kat was partly tormented that agreed so easily but the stronger part of her was relieved. That was until he told her he would like to know why. And what was a logical, untruthful reason she could give him? She was rambling about in her mind trying to find something that would be satisfying enough for him.. and perhaps her too. But she really didn't get much of a chance because it was then that he muttered that it was alright to let your guard down and before thinking she quickly jumped into speaking, "No.. no it's not." Crap.. she was going to have to try to wrap this up pretty soon. Put a band aid on her bleeding heart and crawl away while she still had the strength. "You don't know who people are until you depend on them. They always let you down... It's human nature." Now why would that be important in this case? Why would she bring up the possibility of depending on anything when it came to him.
sh*t! She was going to have to try to turn the conversation around. Her voice was cold but didn't quiet cut to the bone like it did when she was exploding. It was more like a cold truth. "Let's just say I come from a long line of death eaters and dark wizards. Now.. it would be in your best interest to not be around me just in case one day I snap, you happen to be there, and suddenly I join rest of the family." Yeah, she was going to say in Azkaban but that was a whole other piece she didn't want him to know. Although right now he could probably tell where this was going from what she had let slip.
And solid as stone she sat in her seat, part of her asking why she had to be such a freak and she couldn't just enjoy eating lunch with him. However the side that she was letting rule over her right now was just raging to life as she fed it with her actions and quick witted thoughts. "Is that good enough for you? You may not think much of the last name Gillespie but it's also been known for loyalty in the past and I don't think you'd be happy to find out what was done to earn such admiration." Yeah, it wasn't a solid name like Malfoy but since Voldemort first came in to power well they quickly signed up to fight by his side. All of them muggle haters. And though that wasn't her thing well it was family and family had a way of haunting you. She couldn't really judge them, she felt like she would be betraying them if that was the case. But she really didn't know if she was that messed up to go totally insane and risk all she had for some radical idea.

"No.. no it's not."
And with those simple words, all of Kat's defenses and excuses came crumbling down before Gabe. All it took was three simple words and all that running and hiding was for naught. Gabe sat back in the booth and watched Kat as she vainly tried to keep what self esteem she had left together. All that anger and twisting of words made sense to Gabe now, she was pushing him away because she didn't want to hurt him, not because she didn't like him. A hurt ego would mend in its own time, but a heart was something else entirely. All this tough talk was just a red herring, something to throw Gabe off track and it had nearly succeeded. Kat had been hurt before, her words were proof of this, and judging by the adamant way she clung to her belief that no one could be trusted indicated she had been betrayed very badly.
"Usually," he began slowly, moving his hands together, entwining his fingers together, "people let us down because we put them in positions we know they can't win in. And while it does hurt when those people let us down, it won't ever kill us...I promise you that," he said, feeling the need to intervene here, picking up on some sort of cry from help. Gabe didn't know if Kat really wanted help from him, but his gut just told him to start talking and not to stop. Everything became very serious all of a sudden and Gabe's voice showed a change of personality. His face showed that caring side even more clearly now. "Personally, I don't care what your family's done and hasn't done. You choose who you are Kat......not your family. Yeah, they have a hand in leading you here and there, but when it comes down to it, its always your decision whether to follow them or not and to be honest, I just don't see that level of darkness in you," he said, looking down at the table as he pressed the tips of his thumbs against one another now.

Gabe had sort of took it wrong.. or had he? I mean that's kind of what she wanted it to look like. However she wasn't afraid of hurting him, that's what she was trying to do because she was afraid of him hurting her. And true her relatives were in Azkaban, but she really didn't see her ever winding up there. Well not unless it's from being controlled by the imperius curse and all...
She gave a sigh and tried to think of something to scare him out of this. Really she wished she was fortunate enough to have someone there to make her feel everything was going to be okay. But she didn't and that was the facts. She had to be strong for her sister and take care of her... and there wasn't anyone that could do the same for her. It sort of wore her out and spread her thin.
She was running out of ideas but she had to get him to agree that this wasn't a good idea. And as sad as it was she didn't have the energy to scream or make a scene. She sighed, again, and sort of slumped down in her seat, "Why do you try so hard?", she asked as she looked over across at him. I mean she obviously couldn't tell him why she was over reacting and such.. but she could give him a hint that she was making it hard - be it on purpose or not. Regardless of what was said and done within the next few minutes she would have to avoid him at school and outside of. That's just how it was. She was actually starting to enjoy his company and this stupid idea of sharing more of yourself with someone tugged at her when he was around. Truthfully she didn't know if she could just like him as a friend. She felt like if she got close enough for that then she'd always want more.. and that's so unrealistic. I mean they came from totally different worlds and they were totally different people. I mean she was all dark and aloof and he was the ... well, really pretty boy that just had this goofy charm about him. And truth be known many girls would love to be with him, she really believed that.. and her, well who would want to put up with her? She's been malfunctioning for so long.. it would be so easy for him to jet up and leave (like he'd even give her a chance to take things that far) and she'd be alone... .again.

Gabriel didn't expect Kat or anyone else to understand why or what he did. The world wasn't a pleasant place most of the time, what with everyone constantly fighting and rushing to join up with whatever clique or group fit their delusions of grandeur, but every now and again, someone like Gabe came along. Someone who had enough sense to separate themselves from the herd and actually stop long enough to take a real good look around. Everyone had something in common somewhere and if they put as much energy into looking for that one common thread as they did into looking for what made them different, then the world would be a much better place. All this house sorting, blood lineage, it was all crap...plain and simple.
Gabe didn't answer Kat for a moment, he just let her sort of hang out there in the open. He just sat there staring at her, letting everything spin around him. Kat could ask him questions all day but unless she started listening to him, then it wouldn't do any good to answer her, however, that would just be admitting defeat and Gabriel Sutherland wasn't one to go down without a fight. "Because everyone deserves a chance," he said simply, not sure if Kat would understand him or not. She ran from his philosophy, closing her eyes and screaming so she couldn't hear anything that might actually make sense.
Gabe's blue eyes were perhaps the more serious than they had been in a long time. He was desperately reaching for Kat right now, trying to pull her to shore. He hadn't ever fought this hard for someone. Sure he had went the extra mile, but he never felt anything like this, it was like he was giving every part of himself just to keep her sitting here five more minutes.

Kat actually let out a grunt as she brought her hand up to her face using her fingers to push the skin right above her eyebrow up roughly. It wasn't really done to show her frustration, perhaps it took the pressure off of her eyes, whatever the case it usually helped her feel better, especially when stress and irritation started to mount like this and she wanted to fight that. She couldn't make up her mind.. one minute she was ready to just leave and think nothing else about him, the next she would like to just move to talking to something they could agree on and not linger on these iffy moments.
Why did he always put it from some sort of odd.. hero like perspective. It was like he was the savior of the world. He didn't have normal human emotions like anger and disappointment - at least not anything that would really stir a person. Jeez. She gave a half sigh, a half laugh - clearly showing she was just about to give up on this argument.
But quickly she dropped her hand down on the table, next to her plate which was by pure luck cause it wasn't like she had paid attention or was really aiming.... "Yeah, I get that everyone needs a chance but how much verbal abuse to you take before you decide that you've already given that?" She sat there, her eyes wide and giving her head just a slight jerk as if wanting an answer. "Since you are so into pleasing people... I want you to tell me something you want, something selfish.. something that's not the best for humanity or those around you or whatever.. Cause I know you're human. All humans have flaws and desires and I want to know that there's actually a part in you that I can connect with." She knew that she probably shouldn't have just done that.. But when should she ever do anything that she does? She put herself in so many tight spots and had gotten herself into so much trouble before... Just like right now she wanted to tell him that she was sorry about her rude comment and tell him that she didn't want to quit talking to him, seeing him... However she couldn't do that. Besides her body's natural defense keeping her from getting one syllable out, well that would just put her in a more awkward position because then she'd have to explain why she said all of that in the first place.

Kat was right, right about people being selfish, after all, it was in their nature. Gabe might have been a martyr, giving everything he had to make others around him happy, but he was still human. He had desires and dreams just like everyone else, some of them grand and others...well.....just a tad more selfish. He lusted, hungered, wanted, desired, just like Kat did, hell....just like everybody did. Sometimes when he saw other people around him enjoying their siblings or just out enjoying their day with the parents, he felt jealous. Yeah, his parents loved him, but they also loved their jobs and so Gabe got pushed aside from time to time and no matter how much he told himself it was alright.....it wasn't. Maybe this desire to jump out in the middle of danger and darkness to supposedly help those around him was just Gabe's way of getting attention? That question made him uneasy, he had thought about that alot and while he kept telling himself that wasn't it, he couldn't help but see some truth in it.
"I want to got home for once and actually be able to sit down with my parents without having to schedule an appointment," he began, letting the floodgates open so Kat could have her satisfaction, "I want to come to school and not be constantly poked and harassed because I'm a Hufflepuff or a muggle born," he went on, letting out a deep long breath, "I want a girlfriend I can spend my time with instead of having to annoying every last single person I find sitting alone," he kept on ranting, putting his hand up to his mouth now, his breathing becoming a bit more fast paced, "Hell, I just want to enjoy my d*mn sandwich," he said, slamming his hand down on the table top.
Gabe didn't get angry often and for good reason. He had let too much build up inside of him in his young life and once all that got to rolling, it was hard to stop it. "I want to spend more time with you Kat," he said finishing up, "I want....," he said stopping himself before he said something really damaging, "....I want alot of things," he muttered, staring Kat in the eyes. She had asked him and now that she got what she wanted, what would our little Kat do?

Well, Kat was surprised at this little out burst. Alright, perhaps it wasn't a big out burst but coming from the cool laid back Gabe who always had a smile on his face and seemed to laugh at everything you slung at him... Well she had to admit it was completely relieving. She just needed to know that things weren't all sunshine and rainbows over there. That made her feel weird because she didn't fit in. Sure she had alot of problems, alot of problems she clung to. She has grown quiet bitter of the lousy hand that life's dealt her and she tended to be defensive with everyone and everything.
And alot of things he said she could understand, almost relate to. Not that she had to schedule in appointments with her family, she couldn't.. and she didn't want to be forced to live somewhere where she felt she wasn't really wanted. Not that things couldn't be worse.. they could. But it just seemed unfair to her and her sister to have to deal with such things at young ages. And when he talked about being poked at at school, well she couldn't really relate. She usually only got negative attention when she sought it.. However she made note never to let the m word slip again since it did upset him so much... And perhaps she would try to monitor her witty comments because it was just natural for everyone to know think that the Hufflepuff house was a joke, hah.. and it was on everyone that was unfortunate enough to be put into it. Why no one ever heard anything about it that was good - no real accomplishments or anything.
When he commented about wanting a girlfriend, well she partly thought that deep down he already had one. I mean why not? He was handsome... annoying but yes, all guys are. And given that Hufflepuff was supposed to be all 'loyal and hardworking' they would mean he was a prime candidate, right? But then when you are at a school where the Slytherins usually have arranged marriages within their own house and they were just this tight knit society of purebloods.. and Gryffindor, well they were a bit loud and usually stuck to their own house too... Ravenclaws weren't the biggest group of social people and they had a way of being a bit overbearing in their knowledge. It kind of made sense, barely... even if she was hoping this was the case.
Then when he slammed his fist down on the table she didn't move much.. however a small smile slipped over her face. Well, she didn't feel all alone now. She knew that he had problems just like she did and that made her feel alot more relaxed.. say not enough to just spill her heart out or nothing, no.. but enough to make her not want to turn tail and run. "Feel better?", she asked as he sort of wrapped it up.
He made a comment about wanting to spend more time with her and she gave a shrug of her shoulders. "Alright.. I don't see why.. but sure, as long as you understand I'm sorta imbalanced and sometimes unpredictable and you're alright with that." She had gave him such a hard time and what for? Well, other than the fact that it's just her.. he didn't really deserve all of that did he? Besides he was starting to be less annoying after the first few muck ups... So he was trying for her (she assumed). Perhaps it wouldn't be so bad to give him a little lee way. He had just confided in her.. of sorts.. What was it that friends did? They comforted... riiiight. That's it. "Sorry for saying... yeah.. earlier. I didn't mean offense. I'll try not to." Alright.. maybe it wasn't really hard for most but she was taking a big step. He deserved a pat on the back, right? I mean she would want it. "And with the girlfriend part, how about you don't set out to annoy them and you just ask them out. I mean it's not like you'd have a problem.. and if you did, then they aren't worth your time." She gave a slight shrug as she gave him some friendly advice (her jealousy somehow debating).
She gave a slight nod down to her sandwich and picked up a chip and begin eating. If he wanted to enjoy lunch.. it was a large step but she would try to make it happen.

Kat took Gabe's rant in stride and seemed to find some comfort in his small outburst. This struck Gabe as odd, seeing as how he really wasn't the kind to enjoy things like that. Maybe being a drama queen was the prerogative of every girl out there, but maybe it was just seeing Gabe as human, like she said she wanted to see, that set her at ease. His easy going attitude was sort of natural, although it took some work sometime, and not being in that sort of mood all the time, well...it was just a concept that Gabe had a tough time understanding. Being moody was something Kat was.....just like Gabe was mister happy go lucky, Kat was the eternal Grinch. Two exact opposites, but as they say, 'opposites attract'.
Gabe smiled again, although a small one, and found his happy little place in the world again. Kat didn't think he was a freak for flipping out like that, although he did notice she thought him a fruit cake for not acting like that. Kat was certainly one interesting and curious creature, one that Gabe thought he could spend a long time with......Okay, sorry, that sounded a bit stalkerish didn't it?
The compliment she threw out there to him made him question the moment a bit. She didn't think he'd have a hard time finding a girl to go out with him, and while his male ego agreed with that, he wondered just how far that extended to her. This of course made his face turn a slight red, something which he tried to cover up by looking down at his plate. He cleared his throat and laughed at himself for the boyish way he was acting right now and taking Kat's advice, he dove head first into the shallow end. "Alright....," he said, indicating he agreed with her statement, "Kat....Would you go out with me Saturday night?," he asked her, putting the spotlight fully on her now. The redness in his face getting more prominent now as he let his eyes drift up to wait for Kat's response.

Kat sat there, watching him as he started talking again.. Now when she told him he should ask a girl out she figured that would give him incentive to raise his standards. And for a moment she almost said that. Part of her wanting nothing more than for him to ask her, but then another side knew that it was going to be disastrous. I mean it put here out there in the light to make all sorts of mistakes and probably drive him even further away. Then she wanted to say something all gay like 'If it doesn't work out can we still be friends?' cause she had a feeling she would really make it a piece of work. But she couldn't do that.. The mere thought left a strange taste in her mouth. Of course that could have been her heart, because it felt as if it was at the back of her throat, cutting off her oxygen supply.
She didn't really notice him blushing because she was too worried about her own reaction. Her face flushed at first then that pink tone seemed to creep up on it. Her eyes were a little wide, despite the fact she was trying to act casual and thought about squinting them just so he wouldn't notice. That might look a little odd. "Uh..." she started, feeling her brain was going to shut down from the over load. To go or not to go? She may not get this chance again. Surely they could have fun together even if only once and if things did turn out the way she usually expected, then like she felt before.. she'd go out with a bang. She was crazy so she had the right. "Sure." She said it. Feeling like she had just stamped some big document stating she was going to make a total fool out of her if he didn't.
She shook that thought out of her mind. Why did she have to be so screwed up when it came to people? Why couldn't she have a little confidence that things could go right for once? Perhaps she should work on this because she couldn't keep going through life succeeding if she did always think the world was setting one trap up after another.

Kat's answer came fast and quick, faster than Gabe was really ready for, causing him to get choked on his drink. He quickly grabbed his napkin and covered his mouth, laughing at himself which really didn't help matters much. He hadn't expected Kat to be so gung ho on going out with him, especially giving the air of tension between them both. Of course, how much of that was really the truth, I mean, Gabe already had the evening planned out in his head. He had been day dreaming about going out with Kat since he laid eyes on her in the library, sappy I know, but the truth is the truth.
He regained himself, breathing normally once again and clearing his throat. He laid his napkin down on the table and looked up at Kat, smiling as usual. "Great," he said simply, looking like a kid in a candy store....you know, the look he had while he was in the candy shop just twenty minutes ago. "I promise, it'll be like nothing you've experienced before," he said confidently, "or at least I hope it'll be," he added giving Kat a playful wink now. He tried to play it off as a joke of sorts, but now that he thought about it all, he wasn't so sure. He was planning on taking Kat to the bar where his father was playing at, but then he remembered all the muggle references she kept making. Maybe she had been to the muggle world before, and that just sat odd with him. Here she was, a pureblood, with all sorts of muggle knowledge.
He slowly went about eating his sandwich again, that thought still poking at his brain, so much in fact that he finally had to ask her. "How do you know so much about muggle stuff?", he asked her after swallowing yet another bite of his sandwich. He wasn't really poking at her, he was just curious and to be honest, who wouldn't be?

Kat's eyes widened a little as Gabe got choked up on his drink. It was startling and amusing all in the same. But he quickly tried to regroup and he told her that it'd be a night like no other.. or something along that lines. That was the gist anyway. And already she was nervous but she wasn't going to let him see that. So many things could go wrong and she could be the cause of so many. Still she had a few days to mull over it before actually slipping into a state of mild panic. Why were relationships so awkward? I mean not knowing how they feel, whether they feel the same way as you do, and then you can't tell them because that makes things awkward. Like you don't know if they agree because they don't want to hurt your feelings or just the fear of rejection. Of course like he said, Saturday night.. it wasn't like they were going to be walking down any aisles or anything. It was just that relationships and people could scar you and your reputation. Not that she cared a whole lot about what others thought of her but if something horrible came up, well what if it made her own view of her change?
She decided for right now she would force that little bit of crazy down and enjoy the rest of the day. So with that said she put forth a slight smile - one that sort of looked like one that someone would give when they were tired and couldn't put forth alot of effort.. But hey, it was a smile none the less and as little as it seemed it still appeared genuine.
He went back to eating and she even took a few bites of her sandwich, taking a sip right when he asked her how she knew so much stuff about muggles. She sat back in her seat, placing her cup down. A slight shake of her head, "No. Not quiet to that point.", that was her small decline of telling him more about her, her life outside school. And honestly she couldn't see herself telling him about it period.. Why, she'd really have to grow to trust him and fitting of her attitude she didn't have that faith that everything would just work out.
But right now she got the chance to turn things back around on him, quickly enough to where he would be thrown off track and not too soon that it seemed she was being pushy on dodging the question. "What was it like growing up? Did you see alot of magic around the home? And what does... which parent is the muggle?" She was going to ask how.. one saw and lived with the others, whether they were enthusiastic about it or not but now she couldn't remember.. Was his dad a wizard? For some reason she was thinking so but whether that was from him telling her or just some sort of stereotype, well she didn't know.

From the quick rejection of his question and rapid firing of a small group of her own, Gabe got the message loud and clear. Kat wasn't ready to answer too much about herself, especially something like that. Although she kept insisting that Gabe was making a big deal out of house and blood, Kat seemed the bigger enthusiast on that. She wouldn't talk about how she knew so much about muggles, like it would make her an embarrassment or something. Of course, maybe how she knew wasn't by the best means. She had said her family hated muggles didn't she, and maybe in some twisted way, that was how she knew? Had her family been of the kind who liked to attack the muggles on their own turn, going to the muggle world and turning it upside down?
Gabe quickly shook those thoughts from his head, not wanting to believe that Kat could come from such a detestable background. He flashed a smile, doing his best to put on a good show and took a breath in preparation of answering Kat's questions. He found the question about which parent was a muggle. Apparently Kat was under some misapprehension about muggle borns. "Both parents are muggles," he said watching her with a smile, "Hence the title 'muggle born'. If one of them wasn't a muggle, then I'd be a half blood," he said, hoping to clear up any confusion on the two. He didn't think bad of her, in fact, many pure bloods were confused about the whole thing. It would be like dropping a muggle in the wizarding world and expecting them to know everything about it.
"Anyway," he went on, squinting one eye as if thinking back on something, "Growing up was different, even by muggle standards. Being around fame and the money that goes with it sort of puts you in a different bracket than the rest of the world around you. Not that I'm bragging mind you, just stating my opinion," he said, shrugging his shoulders now, "For the most part....it wasn't that bad," he said, not really sure of how or where to start, "Family vacations....parties....and just your usual time together I guess," he finished, giving Kat a funny sort of look as if to say 'sorry'. He really didn't know what to tell her, he had never talked alot about himself and to be honest, he didn't know if Kat's family had done the same sort of things his family had or if they had some unknown wizarding customs he didn't know about.
